Who are in Your Fab 5?

Smart Blog Banner (6).png

Take a moment now to list the five individuals you spend the most time with that are somehow related to the sport you play. These could be fellow teammates, competitors, coaches or friends with whom you work on your strength and conditioning together, even if they don’t happen to play the sport you play.

Now compare your scores with those of the five individuals with whom you are spending the most time.

Are your scores at or below the other individuals you listed? If so, great!

Or are your scores higher than the other individuals you listed? If so, be careful!

Why, because…

  • “You become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn

  • “After 25 years of research, the choice of a reference group is more important in determining your success or failure, than any other single factor.” – David McCleland, Human Performance Expert, Harvard University

Who you spend time with is critically important to your success!

If the people you are spending time with are always finding excuses to not practice, complain about everything, eat poorly, don’t get enough sleep, etc., no matter how hard you try, you will slowly drift in that direction.

On the other hand, if the people you are spending time with spend more time and work extra hard in practice, have great attitudes, eat an excellent diet, get the proper amount of rest, etc., again, no matter how hard you try, you will slowly drift in that direction too.

Based on the analysis you did above, are there any individuals you need to spend less time with in order to reach your greatest potential in your sport? If so, evaluate the other individuals on your team, your friends, coaches and competitors. Do any of them have 8s, 9s or 10s in the areas above? For those are the individuals you need to start spending more time with instead to continue to advance your skills and achieve higher levels of success.
