Name That Sound Game

Imagery is an effective technique for your students to use to manage anxiety, build resilience and help them perform at their best in anything they do - give a class presentation, play a sport, etc. It is most effective when the image in the mind is as vivid as possible and incorporates most, if not all, of their senses.

To help students develop their imagery skills, try out the Name That Sound Game. Here is how to play.

  1. Have the students sit quietly and close their eyes.

  2. Explain that you are going to play a sound effect. As you are playing the sound effect they should try to determine what that sound effect is. Once they have a guess, they should vividly imagine a scene in which that sound effect is taking place.

  3. Play a sound (there are many free ones available online such as those at https://www.zapsplat.com/).

  4. Play the sound a couple more times as the students imagine the scene.

  5. Finally, ask the students to open their eyes and have them guess what the sound effect was. In addition, you may ask them to describe the scene they imagined in as much detail as possible.
