Visualization can be used for many things. One of the ways to use it is to increase your confidence when performing an important task or something you are nervous about (giving a speech, asking someone out on a date, etc.)
An example of this that I read about recently was a story about professional golfer Val Skinner. During a rainy weekend in Atlanta in 1994 Val was competing in a women’s PGA tournament. Play was stopped because of the rain on Saturday and therefore she had to finish up her third round very early Sunday morning.
When she completed her early morning round she ended up just a couple of strokes behind the leader and was going to be playing with the leader in the final round. As she walked to the clubhouse she still had several hours before her final round was to begin. While most of her competitors in between rounds grabbed something to eat and went to the practice green to keep themselves warmed up, Val did something different. Val went back to her hotel room and laid down.
While laying on the bed she imagined herself completing that final round. Detail by detail she vividly saw in her mind how the round was going to go. She clearly watched the flight of all of her drives, the spots on the greens that all of her iron shots were going to land and the break of every putt she was going to make. Each and every detail, including the color her opponents were going to wear were played out in her mind. She finished this visualization on the last hole, smiling as they handed her the winner’s check.
Once that visualization was finished she stood up and went back to the golf course.
The results? Well, things did not go exactly as she had planned, not every shot landed right where she had played it out in her mind. But the one event that did go just about exactly as she imagined was receiving the winner’s check on the 18th green as she had come from behind to win the tournament.
Val said that this daydream gave her a sense of serenity and confidence that lasted throughout the round and helped her to win the tournament.
Try this the next time you are nervous about a task you need to perform. You will find a greater sense of calm and confidence since your mind will see it as something you have already done and succeeded at previously.
