Golf - love it or hate it, you have to admit the pros are pretty amazing. This past weekend was the Masters Tournament. This is the most prestigious of all tournaments and definitely my favorite.
A great friend of mine texted me a clip from the Masters broadcast on Sunday. In the clip Justin Rose is on the tee waiting for the group in front of him to hit their next shot. He walks up to the tee box with no club in his hand, sets up for the shot, looks out onto the fairway to identify the exact spot he wants to hit the ball, and then takes a practice swing.
As he walks back to his golf bag and caddy, the announcer, Jim Nantz comments, “Little, visualization, from Rose as they wait.”
Visualization is a technique that many of the best golfers in the world practice each and everyday. Famous golf coach, Dr. Bob Rotella, in his book, Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, writes, “A golfer can mentally stimulate the experience of reaching his goal, whether it be winning a tournament or breaking 100. If he does it vividly enough, he can in effect fool the mind and body into thinking that the experience actually happened. Later, when he actually comes close to that goal on the golf course, he will not experience discomfort or disorientation. He will instead have a sense of déjà vu, a comforting and calming feeling that he has been in this situation before and handled it successfully.”
He goes on to say, “You have to imagine in vivid detail, much as a novelist draws the reader into a setting by describing the sensory experiences of his character.”
As preparation for your next speech, difficult conversation with a colleague, or round of 18 holes try out this vivid visualization technique. Then enjoy the increased comfort, calm, and confidence you feel as a result of your mind already believing you have executed it successfully.
(Speaking of Jim Nantz, check in with the blog next week for a great story about how Jim and his college roommate, Fred Couples, took visualization to whole other level.)
Wishing you success in all aspects of life,
