A great friend of mine, Brian W., stopped by the other day excited to tell me about a success story.
He explained that he is coaching his son’s basketball team. The team is comprised of 8-year old boys. Watching boys this age play basketball is very interesting. As soon as one child gets the ball, all other nine people on the court swarm around them and try to take the ball away.
To combat this, my friend has taught his players that as soon as they get the ball they can’t hesitate. They either need to pass the ball or shoot quickly.
His team has had some success this year, yet his son was getting frustrated because he had not scored a basket yet.
So, on the day of his most recent game, Brian sat his son down on the couch at home. He placed a basketball in his hands and told him to close his eyes. Then he instructed his son to visualize his shot. He had him think through the entire process - catch the ball, square up to face the basket, lift his hands to shoot, release the ball, follow through on the shot and watch the ball and listen to the sound as it “swooshes” through the net. He had him do this several times in his mind that morning on the couch.
At the game that afternoon, the score was very close throughout the game. During the third quarter, Brian’s son got passed the ball close enough to the basket where a shot attempt was possible. He did exactly like he visualized – caught the ball, squared up to the basket, lifted his hands to shoot, released the ball and followed through. With that, he watched and listened as the shot went right in, and his first basket of the year hit nothing but net!
His son was ecstatic! He ran over to his Dad with a big smile on his face and shouted, “Dad, it worked!”
It worked for Brian’s son and it will work for you too.
