Those medication commercials on TV always make me chuckle. In a 30 second commercial about the medication, they spend half of it explaining how the medication can help you and the other half explaining all the terrible things that could go wrong. Here is a portion of the transcript from a commercial that was aired recently. I have removed the name of the medication so I don’t get sued.
“**** is not for everyone. Call your doctor if your depression worsens or if you have unusual changes in behavior or thoughts of suicide. Antidepressants can increase these in children, teens, and young adults. Elderly dementia patients taking **** have an increased risk of death or stroke. Call your doctor if you have high fever, stiff muscles, and confusion to address a possible life threatening condition or if you have uncontrollable muscle movements as these could become permanent. High blood sugar has been reported with ***** and medicines like it. In some cases, extreme high blood sugar can lead to coma or death. Other risks include decreases in white blood cells which can be serious, dizziness upon standing, seizures, trouble swallowing, and impaired judgment or motor skills.”
I laugh at these commercials because I can’t imagine anyone ever asking their doctor for that medication when they hear about all those potential side effects.
Yet these commercials highlight one of the great benefits of mind body medicine – no side effects!
With the lack of side effects, minimal to no cost, and all the studies proving the benefits, it is no wonder why mind body health practices like meditation and visualization are catching on so quickly.
