We can point to thousands upon thousands of examples to demonstrate that visualization works - that visualizing a goal leads to its achievement in a quicker and more efficient manner. But how does it work?
To understand why and how visualization works you need to understand a small part of your brain that sits just at the base of your brain stem called the reticular activating system (RAS). The RAS is simply a filter, a gatekeeper, or a radar screen for your brain. Its job is to take in the millions of pieces of information (sites, sounds, colors, smells, etc., etc.) that are being experienced by your senses, determine how important they are, and only let the most important stuff through.
The RAS is a wonderful thing. Imagine how overwhelmed we would be if we were consciously aware of all of this information entering our brains. We would be so distracted and confused we would never be able to get anything done!
Another great thing about the RAS is we can program it in a way. A good example to show how this works is to think about the last time you decided to buy a car. Once you found the one you wanted you likely noticed it more on the road, realized that some friends of yours or people you worked with had that same car. Previously you never noticed it. Yet when you were in the process of buying that new car you were programing your RAS to watch for it and your RAS alerted you just about every time it appeared in your sight. Before this the make and model of that car was not important to you so the RAS filter kept it out of your conscious mind and focused on the things that were more important to you.
So when you visualize your goals, or focus on the positive things you want in life, or consciously appreciate all the blessings you have, you are communicating with your RAS. You are telling it that these things are important so be on the lookout for them and let you know when things like this show up.
So with your RAS on the lookout for what you programed you notice opportunities that may have been there all along. Situations and experiences that support your achievement of your goal just seem to appear out of nowhere. And thanks to the programing of your RAS you accomplished through visualization you move closer to the achievement of your goal in a much faster and more efficient manner.
