“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This is my favorite quote from one of my favorite movies of all time, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
The middle of last week I took a day off to drive my youngest daughter to an all-day dance camp in downtown Chicago. My son decided to come with me. When I asked him what he wanted to do, he simply said, “explore.”
When is the last time you went somewhere with absolutely no agenda, no time you had to be anywhere, nothing you had to do? This can be an incredibly freeing experience which can help tremendously when you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed with everything you have to do.
And this was exactly what I experienced on what turned out to be a fantastic day just hanging out with my son. Our questions on this day weren’t do you want to go see the John Hancock Building or Buckingham Fountain, they were instead, do you want to turn right or left at this corner. We got to do so many things over those six hours together. From Millennium Park to Maggie Daley Park to Navy Pier to having lunch with one of my very best friends to playing miniature golf. By just roaming around you run into some pretty interesting things. This picture here is just one example. If you aren’t just randomly roaming around you might not even notice a statue of Bob Newhart at the end of Navy Pier which has a website you can access on your phone in which Bob Newhart will “call” you and give you some background on the statue and his thoughts about the city of Chicago.
It was a great day that reminded me so much of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off that throughout the day I would random sing to my son another one of my favorite parts of the movie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvdfNnYOECs.
With summer winding down why not take a day to just explore? Everyone deserves a Ferris Bueller Day every once in awhile!
