Fitbits are all the rage lately. Friends, family, and neighbors competing against one another in weekend challenges. People taking breaks at work or staying up a bit later to get a few extra steps registered on their fitbits. This is truly a fantastic device as it motivates people to walk, which is one of the best things you can do for your health.
With walking being such a great workout for your physical health why not combine it with a great mental workout as well. This can be done through a form of meditation that has been catching on a lot recently called walking meditation.
To complete walking meditation find a safe location that does not have too many other walkers, runners, bikers, etc., which can be very distracting. You can do this outdoors or even back-and-forth in a room in your house. As you are walking your eyes should be focused on the ground just a few steps ahead of you. Your mental focus should be on your feet. Be mindful of what is happening to your feet the entire time. Notice the rhythm of the way your feet touch the ground – making first contact with your heel then the rest of your foot, your heel then lifting and pushing off the ground with the ball of your foot and your toes. Keep your focus on this movement. As you catch your mind wandering, simply acknowledge that you are thinking in a non-judgmental manner and bring the focus back to your feet.
This week I challenge you to try out walking meditation and burn a few calories while you complete your daily mind body practice.
Wishing you success in all aspects of life,
