“Just breathe,” is advice we receive in situations as diverse as when we are about to give a presentation in public to when a woman is in labor. This is great advice as it helps us to regain our focus and composure in a difficult or stressful situation. Yet to receive the greatest benefits from breathing we need to do it correctly.
Due to all the stress we have in our lives many of us have created a habit of breathing like we do in stressful situations. In these situations we tend to hold our breath, breathe irregularly, and exhale incompletely.
The most healthful method of breathing however is what we did naturally as babies – deep breathing with our bellies and not our chests. This type of breathing creates the greatest amount of oxygen exchange and stretches the muscle fibers, which then signals relaxation throughout the body and mind.

Take a moment now to take 5 deep belly breaths. Do this periodically every day this week so you can begin to retrain your body to this more healthful way of breathing.
