Details of yet another study showing the benefits of meditation was published last week in the NY Times. The participants in this study were unemployed men and women who were seeking work and under a lot of stress.
This is one of the first studies of Mindfulness meditation to compare results to a placebo control group. The study found that after three days of mindfulness meditation all participants reported feeling less stressed and refreshed but only the mindfulness participants showed changes in their brains. The article stated, “There was more activity, or communication, among the portions of their brains that process stress-related reactions and other areas related to focus and calm. Four months later, those who had practiced mindfulness showed much lower levels in their blood of a marker of unhealthy inflammation than the relaxation group, even though few were still meditating.”
