For my final post of tips and ideas I received from the Mindful Leadership Summit I want to share a key to future career success as well as a breathing technique for high-stress situations. These were shared by Emma Seppala, from Stanford University and Yale University and author of The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success.
Expertise or Creativity?
Which do you think companies in today’s world are looking for most in their workers, expertise or creativity? The answer is without a doubt, creativity. Expertise is now easy to get with the access to information that the Internet provides. So companies need individuals who can take that information and be creative with it.
Creativity happens when our brains are in delta mode. This is when we are not stressed, not working all the time, not in an active, focused activity. My own experiences, and I bet yours too, demonstrate this to be true. Our most creative ideas and insights usually come when we aren’t thinking about the task. They come, when we are in the shower, when we are just about to fall asleep (assuming we aren’t falling into bed completely exhausted), etc. They rarely come when we are grinding it out on a particular task or when we are checking Facebook, or when we are trying to clear out the hundreds of emails in our inboxes.
So, on a regular basis, take some time to go for a walk (without checking your phone constantly) or simply give yourself permission to take a break in the day to just sit and be. Your future career success may just depend on it!
High Stress Situations Breathing Technique
Emma explained that when we breathe in our heart rate goes up and when we breathe out our heart rate goes down. So in high stress situations, to lower our blood pressure, regain some sense of calm and react appropriately to the situation she suggested the following breathing technique.
Try that technique out now and the next time you are in a stressful situation.
