Every year about this time I take a few days off to do a major house cleaning. I love to straighten things up and get rid of all the useless stuff that has piled up throughout the year. My children are forced to participate in this as well so after those few days they can’t wait for dad to get back to work!
This year’s cleaning spree reminded me of a Yale University study that was conducted several years ago. In this study the researchers told one group of house cleaners that the activities of their normal job burn calories, like a cardio workout. They did not share this information with the other group.
Several weeks later, the researchers found that the first group actually lost weight and lowered their cholesterol, while the other group experienced no changes at all.
This is another great example of the power of the mind. These two groups of house cleaners did the exact same things they had always done when cleaning house. Yet when the idea that these activities were similar to a cardio workout was placed in one group’s mind, the health benefits of those activities were taken to another level. It seems a little knowledge goes a long way to better health.
