This week I am privileged to share a real-life story from a very good friend of mine, Cassie Moore. This story clearly demonstrates the awesome healing powers of visualization and guided imagery.
Cassie is one of the warmest, friendliest people I know. She has this incredible positive energy that lights up any room she is in. It is such an amazing story! Here it is in her own words.
"Fourteen years ago it was determined that I needed to have surgery to resection my colon. My family has a history of colon cancer and recently I lost my mother to this disease. I had recurring infections that led to several hospitalizations. The threat was that under these conditions my colon could burst, leaving me septic and in a life-threatening situation. Plus, the outcome of an emergency surgery versus an elective one most certainly would not have the same prognosis or recovery. So at that point I knew I had to make the decision.
At the time my family was young. My daughter was only 9, my son 13. I was tremendously fear based because most of the specialists warned me of complications, infections, and a possible altered state in my body. Surgery recovery was long, lasting 6 weeks or more. The scheduled time in the hospital was 8-10 days. Surgery was going to remove the section of colon that was damaged.
Prior to the surgery my anxiety grew. I found myself dwelling on all the negatives, the "What ifs"....all the possible dark places a person can go. For the pre-surgical visit the hospital had me fill out my living will. It was at this time my anxiety increased two-fold. I was convinced that I would die during surgery, leaving my young family. That is when a friend told me about a therapist who works with people for pre-surgical preparations. I made an appointment.
Debra was instrumental in guiding me through visualizations and guided imagery. She helped me to channel my anxiety into self-healing, calming, peaceful thoughts. I was always a spiritual person and she honed in on my already solid foundation with Christ in my life, as part of the healing process.
I listened to tapes narrated by a women named Belleruth Naparstek. In these tapes the visualization was to go to a peaceful serene spot in nature, where you find peace, calm and solitude. After which, the tapes guided you through the surgery. The operating room, instead of a place of terror, was a safe place of healing, where competent, good people who loved you were taking every step to ensure the best possible outcome. An image of Jesus standing next to them was also placed next to my side. My body was guided to send healing rich oxygen and nourishing blood to the site for healing. My organs were all healthy and strong and helping to support my recovery.
The next step was to get permission to listen to the tapes throughout the surgery. This was done so that my subconscious only heard words of inspiration and healing. I fell asleep to the calming music and awoke to the same.
My results were nothing short of MIRACULOUS, I was up and walking 6 hours after my surgery. I actually bumped into my doctor in the hall - he was dumbfounded. He said "What are you doing?" I told him, "you said I should get up and walk when I felt up to it". "Wow! That is fantastic!" was all he could think to say. The next morning during rounds 12 doctors came into my room. I was at The University of Chicago Hospital, a large teaching hospital and their rounds included residents. They asked, "What are you doing that every other patient on this floor is not?" I told them.
They said my recovery process has been unprecedented.
I went home after four days and never had one complication. I remain completely healthy. To this day I am completely convinced that my outcome was due to the fact that I used these techniques of healing. Had I entered that surgery without these tools I am confident that I would have had a much more grim outcome. These techniques have been utilized in my life repeatedly, and they still have a tremendous impact on my health. I am so grateful and blessed that I had the opportunity to find out how important visualization can be. I am a walking miracle."
Thank you Cassie for sharing your amazing story!
