Be S.M.A.R.T.

It is New Year’s Resolutions time!  This is a great time to set a goal or two around better physical and mental health.  To increase the likelihood that you will achieve the goals, be sure to structure them in the S.M.A.R.T. format.  When using this format you will want to word the goals to meet as many of the following characteristics as possible:
  • Specific - You need to clearly define what exactly it is you want done.  Describe in as much detail as possible what it will look like when the goal is successfully accomplished.
  • Measurable – What gets measured gets done.  (Example: A goal like “lose weight” is too vague.  Instead the goal should be written as “lose 15 pounds“)
  • Attainable – A goal that is too lofty is demotivating.  If your goal is too far out of reach you will likely get frustrated easily and give up.
  • Relevant – A goal must be relevant to your values and beliefs.
  • Time-bound – When does this need to be completed by? (Example: “By October 31…”)

Studies consistently show that writing goals in this format, with a clear understanding of what you want and by when, greatly increases the chances that the goal will be accomplished successfully in the required timeframe.

Wishing you success in all aspects of life,
